If you grew up in the 80s, as I did, you probably remember the movie The ‘Burbs. I absolutely loved it as a kid — that strange mix of comedy, mystery, and just plain weird suburban chaos. Seeing Tom Hanks running around suspicious of his neighbors made it unforgettable for me, and it’s one of those films that stuck in my memory for years.

The original movie came out in 1989 and starred Tom Hanks alongside Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, and Corey Feldman. It followed a regular suburban guy who becomes convinced that the odd new family down the street is hiding something dark. The film mixed humor with creepy moments and poked fun at how quickly neighbors can turn paranoid. It didn’t get amazing reviews at first, but over time it became a true cult classic — and honestly, it still feels like a perfect snapshot of 80s entertainment.

Fast forward to now, and The ‘Burbs has been reimagined as a television series — and I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it at first. Some classics are hard to touch. But surprisingly… I really enjoyed the show.

The new series, released in 2026 on Peacock, stars Keke Palmer and Jack Whitehall as a couple moving back into a quiet suburban neighborhood that turns out to be full of secrets. What starts as normal suburban life quickly becomes a mystery filled with suspicious neighbors, dark secrets, and plenty of humor along the way.

What I liked most is that the show doesn’t try to copy the movie exactly. Instead, it keeps that strange, funny, slightly creepy vibe while adding modern storytelling and deeper themes about community and hidden secrets behind perfect lawns.

Watching the series brought back that same feeling I had as a kid watching the original — wondering what was really going on behind closed doors and laughing at the chaos that follows. It feels familiar enough for longtime fans but fresh enough to stand on its own.

In the end, the 1989 movie will always hold a special place in my heart. But the new series surprised me in the best way. It reminded me why I loved The ‘Burbs in the first place — the humor, the mystery, and that feeling that even the quietest neighborhoods might be hiding something strange.

If you loved the movie growing up, as I did, I think the series is definitely worth a watch. Not because it replaces the classic… but because it gives a new generation a reason to fall in love with The ‘Burbs all over again.

Snow had been falling since dawn in South Bend, Indiana — the kind of snow that hushes everything. Streets gleamed white under the soft gold of holiday lights. Inside St. Augustine’s Chapel, warmth bloomed from the radiators, and candles scented the air with pine and cinnamon.

Renee Miller stood before the mirror in the small bridal room, her lace gown whispering around her. It wasn’t nerves, not really. It was awe. The moment she’d dreamed of since the first December she could remember — only this time, the man waiting for her at the altar wasn’t a stranger.

He was Byron Simmons — her first love, her once-upon-a-time, and now… her forever.

Love, Interrupted

They’d grown up together right there in South Bend. Byron was the star of the high school basketball team; Renee was the girl behind the yearbook camera, always catching him mid-jump shot. Guests clinked mugs of peppermint hot chocolate instead of champagne. Each table was crowned with snow globes that guests couldn’t resist shaking between songs.

Halfway through the night, Byron tugged Renee’s hand and led her to the porch. Snow still fell in lazy flakes.

“Do you realize,” he said, wrapping his coat around her shoulders, “we’re the last wedding of the year in South Bend?”

“That’s fitting,” she said. “We’re closing the chapter right.”

He smiled. “And starting the next one.”

Carolers passed by on the street, singing ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.’ Renee leaned into him, her head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.

“I never thought I’d find this again,” she whispered.

“Neither did I,” Byron said. “Guess some love stories just circle back around.”

Love That Lingers Like Snow

After the guests drifted home and the candles melted low, the couple sat beneath the glow of the Christmas tree.

Renee lifted a fragile glass angel — one of her late mother’s ornaments. Byron had glued it back together after one of her nieces dropped it earlier that week.

“I wasn’t about to let something this beautiful stay broken.”

He brushed a loose curl from her cheek. “I couldn’t if I tried.”

Trailer Thoughts: The Running Man is Back and It Looks Awesome!

Dear Readers,

Okay—I just saw the trailer for the new version of The Running Man and I am so excited! As someone who’s been a longtime fan of Stephen King (or in this case, Richard Bachman), this was one of those “finally!” moments.

Let’s be clear: I really enjoyed the original 1987 movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was bold, wild, and packed with that over-the-top '80s action flair. But from the looks of this new version? We're getting something that still feels fun and entertaining—but maybe with a little more heart from the book. And yes, it even looks closer to the original novel, which makes me ridiculously happy.

For those who don’t know, The Running Man was one of Bachman’s most gripping stories—fast-paced, intense, and surprisingly emotional in places. And while the original movie was iconic in its own way, it definitely took some creative liberties. This new trailer seems to strike a great balance: action-packed, visually exciting, and true to the spirit of the book without being too dark or dreary.

Also, can I take a moment to say—Roadwork is still my favorite Bachman novel. And yes, I’m holding out hope that someone, someday, gives it the adaptation it deserves. It’s raw, emotional, and so underrated. Come on, Hollywood. You know it would be amazing.

So yeah, fellow King fans, mark your calendars. The Running Man is making a comeback, and it looks like it's going to be a blast. I’ll be the one in the front row with popcorn in hand and a Bachman paperback in my bag.
